Hayward Industries Recalls Universal Pool Heaters Due to Risk of Serious Injury or Death from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Hazard

CPSC Product recall issued Sep 17, 2026.

This recall involves Hayward-branded HDFS400 Universal-HC Series pool heaters. The 400,000 BTU dual-fuel gas heaters are brown with black atop and measure 21 inches long, 28 inches wide and 31 inches high. The pool heaters have a digital display control panel at the top and a molded base with integrated tie-down connections. The heater's name plate is below the vent with the word "Hayward" appearing at the bottom of the name plate and the model number "HDFS400" appears at the top of the name plate.

Stop using the product immediately, even if yours seems fine. CPSC recalls are issued after a hazard is confirmed, often from a small number of incidents.

Read the remedy line on the notice — it will say refund, replacement, or free repair kit. Companies must honor it whether or not you have a receipt.

Do not resell or donate a recalled item. Reselling recalled products is illegal, and thrift shops are a common way they keep circulating.

For nursery and toy recalls, check secondhand and hand-me-down gear too. That is where recalled cribs, sleepers, and bassinets usually turn up.

Report a product that hurt someone at SaferProducts.gov. Those reports are the main trigger for new investigations.
